Udupi District In-charge Minister Rizwan Arshad recently asserted that developing tourism is crucial for generating local employment opportunities and preventing youth migration from coastal Karnataka. Speaking at the Kaup Taluk Prajaseva Andolana meeting held at the Kaup Taluk Office Auditorium on Saturday, September 19, he highlighted the region's potential.
Arshad emphasized that tourism represents coastal Karnataka's greatest strength. A thriving tourism sector, he noted, would not only boost local jobs but also encourage young people to build their careers within the region, rather than seeking work abroad. He envisioned coastal areas transforming into a 'paradise' for the world, provided communities foster peace and harmony alongside focused development initiatives.
The minister presided over the Prajaseva Andolana, a state government initiative designed to address the challenges faced by rural residents. These public service meetings, organized at taluk and hobli levels, aim to resolve grievances and deliver solutions within specified timelines. Arshad urged citizens to fully utilize these forums.
He further underscored the government's unwavering commitment to coastal development. As a prime example, he cited the recent cabinet meeting in Mangaluru—the first of its kind in the coastal region in 80 years. This historic session allowed for extensive discussions on regional issues and development projects. Arshad also mentioned Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai's personal visit to Hebri yesterday, where the CM listened to villagers' concerns regarding the new draft notification of the Kasturirangan report, pledging a suitable resolution.
Kaup MLA Gurme Suresh Shetty advised that public representatives and officials must serve as a vital link between the government and society. He stressed that a consistent, systematic approach to Prajaseva Andolana meetings, followed by action on resolution reports, would effectively address public issues. District Commissioner Swaroopa T.K. earlier explained that these meetings ensure government benefits reach eligible beneficiaries directly, moving beyond bureaucratic confines.
During the event, Minister Arshad unveiled a poster for "Krishi Mela – 2026." Beneficiaries also received various aid, including battery-operated wheelchairs, sewing machines, and talking laptops, distributed by the Department for Empowerment of Differently Abled & Senior Citizens and the D. Devaraj Urs Corporation. The Kaup Prajaseva Andolana meeting received a total of 75 applications, with a significant number from landless individuals requesting land allotments. Concerns were also raised about the high incidence of accidents at Padubidri Junction on National Highway 66.
The event saw the presence of several dignitaries, including Coastal Development Board Chairman M.A. Gafoor, District In-charge Secretary Rohini Sindhuri Dasari, and Kaup Tahsildar Anantha Shankar B, who extended the welcome.
