On Saturday, July 25, a dispute erupted at Nirmala Vidyalayam in Kalwakurthy mandal, Nagarkurnool district, Telangana, as BJP and ABVP functionaries accused the school management of attempting to convert students to Christianity. BJP Kalwakurthy President Deo confronted a teacher, questioning the practice of taking students to church every Sunday. The teacher responded that the trips were intended to teach students values and ensure their safety, as leaving them unattended could lead to mischief or fighting. Deo suggested taking the students to a nearby temple instead. A complaint was lodged with the Kalwakurthy police, alleging that vulnerable children were being targeted with promises of assistance and other inducements. The police have acknowledged the complaint and are expected to conduct a preliminary inquiry. The school management has been advised to assign staff to hostel duties on Sundays and to only take willing students to church.
The incident has sparked tension in the area, with local organisations demanding an inquiry into the school’s functioning and measures to prevent alleged conversion attempts. Photographs show students and representatives outside the police station after submitting the complaint. The police sub-inspector, Kurumurnthy, stated that the management had been taking students to church to prevent untoward incidents, but has now been asked to ensure student safety and obtain consent before taking them to church.
