New Delhi. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has got a big relief in the Modi Surname case today. At the same time, the Supreme Court has also stayed the twoyear sentence given to Rahul Gandhi in this case. It is known that the Gujarat HC had given this sentence to Rahul Gandhi, on which the Supreme Court has now given its verdict today.

However, today the Supreme Court also said that, There is no doubt that statements are not in a good mood, in public life a person is expected to exercise caution while making public speeches.” As this court said while accepting his affidavit in the contempt petition, he (Rahul Gandhi) should have been more careful.

Today, the matter was debated in the Supreme Court for 3 hours. Today, Rahuls lawyer Manu Sanghvi said that Purnesh Modi, who filed the defamation case, has changed his surname and not his real surname. Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing for Rahul, said, The real surname of complainant Purnesh Modi is not Modi. He adopted this surname later. During this, the court asked why the maximum punishment in this case? He said he could have been given a lesser sentence. They are not disqualified at all.

Today, the hearing of Rahuls case was heard by a bench of Justices BR Gavai, PS Narasimha and Sanjay Kumar. At the same time, Rahul Gandhi has demanded a stay on his sentence in this regard. The Gujarat High Court had refused to stay Rahuls twoyear sentence in the defamation case.

On April 11, 2019, While addressing an election rally in Kolar, Bengaluru, Rahul Gandhi made a big statement about the Modi surname. Later, BJP MLA Purnesh Modi filed a defamation complaint against him. The case went on for four years in the sessions court and the verdict came on March 23, 2023. In this defamation case, Rahul was sentenced to a maximum of two years. Due to which his MP also lost his hand. In this case, the Supreme Court has also stayed the twoyear sentence given to Rahul Gandhi.
