The Save Dakshina Kannada Forum on Tuesday urged the state government to preserve the historical name of Dakshina Kannada district, rejecting any proposals to rename it 'Mangaluru District.' Speaking at a press conference in Mangaluru, representatives of the forum announced their intention to submit a memorandum to the Chief Minister outlining their concerns.
Writer William Pais, speaking on behalf of the forum, clarified that their demand does not oppose Mangaluru city itself. 'Mangaluru stands as an historical, cultural, and economic hub of this region, possessing its own unique identity and significance,' Pais stated. 'However, the name Dakshina Kannada represents a much broader geographical, historical, and cultural area that extends beyond Mangaluru. It is crucial to retain this encompassing name.'
Researcher Bennett Ammann provided historical context, noting that Dakshina Kannada district boasts an administrative history spanning over 150 years. He explained that the region was historically known as 'South Canara' or 'South Kanara.' In January 1977, the Karnataka government officially changed 'South Kanara' to 'Dakshina Kannada,' establishing nearly five decades of continuous historical usage for the current name.
Ammann further argued against the administrative necessity of naming the district after its central city. He highlighted that numerous towns, villages, and historical sites, including Puttur, Beltangady, Sullia, Bantwal, Moodbidri, and Mulki, constitute integral parts of Dakshina Kannada's expansive identity. The forum welcomed the government's initiative to collect public opinion on the matter but insisted that this process must be comprehensive and transparent. They emphasized that feedback should not remain confined to Mangaluru city but must encompass all taluks, towns, and villages across the district. Additionally, the forum called for considering the views of historians, academicians, writers, cultural organizations, and other key stakeholders. Prof. Krishnamurthy and Steven Pais were also present at the press briefing.
