The Karnataka Cabinet, convening in Mangaluru on September 18, officially recognized Tulu as the state's second language. Health and Family Welfare Minister U.T. Khader hailed this move as a moment of immense joy for the people of Tulunadu and coastal Karnataka. During the session, the cabinet also granted in-principle approval for a draft notification to rename the Dakshina Kannada district as Mangaluru district, addressing a long-standing public demand.
Speaking to reporters post-meeting, Minister Khader conveyed his gratitude to Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar and the entire cabinet for making Tulu recognition a reality, a goal many had deemed impossible. He underscored Tulu's profound significance, describing it not merely as a spoken language but as the comprehensive expression of coastal-Tulunadu's culture, heritage, traditions, cuisine, attire, and indigenous games. Preserving the language, Khader stated, ensures the continuity of the region's harmony and customs for future generations. He anticipated that this recognition would lead to its use in government offices and the appointment of translators, benefiting local residents.
Regarding the district's renaming, Khader acknowledged the persistent requests from traders, farmers, elders, and the general public. He clarified that the government prefers a democratic approach, seeking public input before a final decision. Consequently, the draft notification will be released for one month, inviting suggestions and feedback from individuals and organizations. The ultimate decision, Khader assured, would reflect the aspirations of the majority.
The cabinet also greenlit several significant development initiatives aimed at shaping the future of the coastal and Mangaluru regions over the next 10-15 years. This includes in-principle approval for the 'Mangaluru Eye' commercial complex, envisioned near Kadri Park. This project will utilize approximately five acres of horticulture department land under a PPP model with VGF grants, featuring a mall, community center, city-sea view, and a revolving restaurant. Additionally, the District Wenlock Hospital will be upgraded to a regional hospital, adding 200 beds for a total of 1,150, alongside new ICU facilities and essential equipment.
