Indian government in touch with family of Indian woman who went missing from Singapore cruise ship

 

Singapore: The Government of India is in constant touch with the family of an Indian woman who went missing after falling from a ship while passing through the Singapore Strait from Malaysia’s northern island state of Penang. The Indian High Commission here gave this information on Tuesday. The incident took place on Monday when Rita Sahni, 64, and her husband Jakesh Sahni, 70, were on their way back to Singapore from Penang on board the ‘Spectrum of the Seas’ ship. Monday was the last day of the couple’s four-day cruise trip. The woman fell into the water from the cruise ship.

In a series of tweets, the Indian High Commission said it has been in constant touch with the Sawhney family since the news of the unfortunate incident was received. The High Commission said it is also in touch with the Singapore authorities to resolve the related issues and is trying to facilitate legal procedures.The mission said it has also contacted the Head of India at Royal Caribbean Cruise Company.

“We are committed to extending full support to the family in this difficult time,” the High Commission said.When 70-year-old Jakesh woke up, he found his wife missing from his room, The Straits Times reported on Tuesday. Jakesh tried to find his wife on the cruise, but failed. He later informed the ship’s crew, who told him that something from the ship had fallen into the Singapore Strait.It is a 113-km-long and 19-km-wide busy shipping route between the Malacca Strait and the South China Sea with Singapore.
