Deputy Chief Minister Dr. G. Parameshwara announced government plans to effectively utilize the long-unused Mangalore University Post-Graduate Study and Advanced Research Centre building in Belapu, Kaup taluk, Udupi, following his inspection of the facility. He outlined a broader vision for coastal Karnataka's development, tourism, and infrastructure during his interaction with media.
The facility, constructed at a cost of Rs. 53.85 crore, has remained vacant for several years since its completion. Dr. Parameshwara indicated that officials are reviewing suitable purposes for the campus, including the potential establishment of a Sports University for the state. Concurrently, the administration is also assessing the feasibility of setting up a medical college within Udupi district.
Addressing other regional projects, the DCM noted that the proposed Science Centre in Mangaluru, initially announced in the 2014-15 budget, remains incomplete. Its implementation, planned under the central government's RUSA scheme, stalled due to project discontinuation. Dr. Parameshwara also confirmed that an upcoming cabinet meeting in the coastal region would prioritize discussions on pressing local issues, development initiatives, and significant matters related to tourism.
Emphasizing the immense tourism potential of Karnataka's coastline, he stated the government's intent to boost employment and economic activity by promoting various ventures, including the Udupi International Surfing event. He also highlighted efforts to attract "soft industries" rather than large-scale manufacturing to the region. Additionally, the development of key coastal stadiums, such as the Udupi Stadium and Mangala Stadium in Mangaluru, will feature on the cabinet's agenda.
Separately, Dr. Parameshwara mentioned that a special session of the State Legislature, scheduled for September 21, 22, and 23, will comprehensively debate the Kasturirangan report and the prevailing drought conditions across the state. Decisions regarding necessary aid for farmers and government interventions will be made during this session.

Jagalasar, Karnataka Housing Board Engineer Sahana, former Belapu Panchayat President Deviprasad Shetty, and contractor Vasudev Shetty.
