An Indian sailor tragically lost his life in an assault on a commercial vessel operating off the coast of Oman on Monday evening, November 2. The attack, which took place near Limah, has drawn strong condemnation from India, prompting New Delhi to issue an urgent call for an immediate de-escalation of tensions across the vital maritime region.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed on Tuesday, November 3, that the targeted vessel, identified as MSV Al Jusufi, had 14 Indian nationals on board. While 13 of these individuals were successfully rescued, one Indian citizen tragically succumbed to injuries sustained during the incident. Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal later identified the deceased as Gandhar Nahim Ajij, a native of Gujarat, conveying his profound condolences to Ajij's family and loved ones during this period of immense grief.
India's Embassy in Oman is actively engaged in monitoring the evolving situation. Diplomatic officials are coordinating closely with Omani authorities to ensure the swift repatriation of both the rescued Indian nationals and the mortal remains of Mr. Ajij, ensuring all necessary international and local protocols are meticulously followed.
New Delhi has voiced deep concern regarding the continuing incidents of attacks on commercial shipping in the region. These repeated acts, the MEA highlighted, pose a significant threat not only to regional stability but also to global commerce and energy security. The ministry reiterated its plea for a prompt de-escalation of tensions and the conclusion of ongoing negotiations for a diplomatic resolution aimed at restoring enduring peace and stability. Emphasizing the paramount necessity of upholding international law, the MEA asserted that the targeting of commercial shipping and civilian infrastructure must cease immediately. It further stressed the urgent need to reinstate free and unimpeded navigation and commerce through the region's international waterways at the earliest opportunity, ensuring the safety of all seafarers and vessels.
