In a significant development concerning the brutal chainsaw attack in Andhra Pradesh's Anantapur district, the assailant, Hemanth, has undergone a right leg amputation, while his 15-year-old victim, Gopika, is now off ventilator support and showing signs of recovery. These updates emerged from Government General Hospital, Anantapur, and Manipal Hospital, Bengaluru, respectively, following events that unfolded from October 31 to November 1.
Doctors at Government General Hospital in Anantapur performed the amputation of Hemanth's right leg past Monday midnight. The 21-year-old, injured during police firing on November 1 in the Atmakur forest area while attempting to flee, suffered a severe lack of blood circulation, necessitating the procedure below the knee. Hospital Superintendent Malliswari confirmed the operation. Hemanth also received surgery on his left leg and is currently stable in the Acute Medical Care Unit.
Meanwhile, 15-year-old Gopika, who sustained horrific injuries in the attack, is making steady progress at Manipal Hospital in Bengaluru. Andhra Pradesh Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Satya Kumar Yadav, announced on Tuesday that she is off the ventilator and can now speak one word at a time. Medical staff are gradually reducing high-flow oxygen support, with nutrition administered via a nasal tube.
HRD Minister Nara Lokesh, who visited the hospital on Monday, also provided an encouraging update. He stated, 'The girl child is showing steady improvement. Eyes are open and all vital parameters remain stable. Initial ophthalmology and neurosurgery reviews show no major concerns. Further detailed eye evaluations and ortho surgery will follow later this week. Continuous monitoring is underway, and we are praying for a full and speedy recovery.'
The harrowing incident occurred on October 31 when Hemanth barged into a classroom at Zilla Parishad High School in Raptadu, attacking Gopika, a Class 10 student, with an electric chainsaw. The victim, a close relative, suffered severe injuries to her head, face, and back after she reportedly spurned his proposal.
