Food safety officials in Dakshina Kannada recently conducted a thorough inspection of ice manufacturing units located at the bustling Mangaluru Bunder fishing harbour. This initiative, prompted by directives from State Health Minister U.T. Khader, saw a team led by District Designated Food Safety Officer Dr. Praveen Kumar C.H. scrutinize facilities producing ice vital for preserving fresh fish.
During their visit, inspectors noted that several units sourced fresh water for ice production through private water tankers. To ensure public health standards, the team collected various ice samples for laboratory analysis. Operators received strict instructions to only resume ice manufacturing after securing laboratory reports that confirm the quality and safety of their water supply.
One specific unit, run by the Mangaluru Trawl Boat Fishermen's Primary Cooperative Society, garnered positive attention. Officials observed this facility employing modern machinery to produce what appeared to be clean ice. Water samples from this particular unit were also collected and dispatched for comprehensive testing.
Beyond water quality, the officials emphasized the critical importance of using only ice made from high-quality water to maintain the freshness and hygiene of fish. They issued clear directives to all unit operators, urging them to implement all necessary precautionary measures to uphold stringent food safety standards throughout their operations. A stern warning was also delivered against the unauthorized use of formalin or any other chemical preservatives on fish, underscoring the commitment to consumer safety in coastal Karnataka's significant fishing industry.
