A woman undertrial prisoner was stopped at the main gate of Parappana Agrahara Central Prison in Bengaluru after a court appearance, when staff discovered she was trying to bring Rs 11,500 into the facility.
During the routine security check, female prison officials frisked her and found the cash hidden in her clothing. The amount, along with other prohibited items, is not allowed inside the prison without explicit permission.
Prison authorities immediately filed a complaint with the Electronic City police station and the matter was registered as a case against the inmate. Investigators are now probing whether the money was meant for a specific inmate or for an unauthorised transaction inside the jail.
While the exact motive remains unclear, officials suspect the cash could have been intended for illicit dealings among prisoners. Police will question the accused and explore any possible external contacts who may have helped conceal the money.
Parappana Agrahara has faced similar security breaches in the past, with reports of mobile phones, narcotics and other contraband being smuggled into the premises. The latest incident has revived concerns over the effectiveness of current screening procedures.
Electronic City police have opened a formal investigation, examining how the cash was hidden and whether accomplices were involved. The enquiry will also assess if the seized amount was linked to any larger financial network operating within the correctional system.
Authorities stress that preventing prohibited articles and unauthorised financial activity remains a constant challenge for Karnataka prisons. Further updates are expected as the investigation unfolds.
