Kochi: Anto Augustine, the proprietor of Reporter TV, did not appear for police questioning on Monday regarding an FIR filed against him for alleged defamatory remarks concerning Chief Minister Satheesan. His legal counsel informed authorities at the Kalamassery police station that Augustine was not in the city and would soon petition the Kerala High Court to quash the FIR.
The case originates from statements Augustine purportedly made at a public function approximately two weeks ago. He claimed two young men had approached him with marriage documents, which he then investigated at the Baindoor Sub-Registrar's Office, asserting the documents were in his possession. These remarks swiftly triggered a political controversy, widely interpreted as an allegation targeting Chief Minister Satheesan's personal life.
Following the remarks, KPCC spokesperson Raju P. Nair filed a complaint, alleging Augustine's intent was to publicly insult the Chief Minister. The Director General of Police subsequently directed the registration of a case based on this complaint. The FIR alleges that Anto Augustine and two other individuals conspired in the matter, knowingly possessing forged documents. Police are actively examining the circumstances under which these alleged documents were obtained and whether they were fabricated. Raju P. Nair's complaint also sought the seizure of the documents and an examination of CCTV footage to identify those reportedly involved in preparing the purportedly forged records.
This latest development adds another layer to Anto Augustine's ongoing legal challenges. He is also a principal accused in the Muttil tree-felling cases, where police have filed chargesheets concerning alleged large-scale felling and transportation of timber following a controversial Revenue Department order issued in 2020. Furthermore, Augustine was released on bail last week in an abkari case after spending a few days in jail.
Augustine's decision to bypass police interrogation and directly challenge the FIR in the High Court could introduce fresh legal complexities to the case. Police are expected to proceed with their investigation, carefully examining the complaint, the FIR, and all material cited by the complainant.
