Srinagar: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) Kashmir recently apprehended a long-absconding individual, Soom Nath Koul, connected to a multi-crore fraud case. Koul, identified with a Bangalore North address, was arrested in Janipur, Jammu, following specific orders from the Sub-Judge's Court in Srinagar, concluding years of evasion.
A special team from the J&K Crime Branch's investigation agency worked tirelessly to execute the court's directive. After extensive efforts and adhering to due procedure, the team successfully traced and detained Koul, who had remained absconding for several years. During this period, authorities issued 'Hue and Cry Notices' to locate him, but he allegedly used various identities to evade detection.
Koul faces involvement in five cases registered with the Crime Branch, Kashmir. These cases include allegations of cheating, forgery, and land-related fraud, specifically targeting migrant properties through the use of fake Powers of Attorney and sale agreements. In one particular case, investigators had already filed a chargesheet against him in absentia under Section 512 CrPC. Investigations revealed Koul allegedly induced individuals to purchase land by posing as different people, including Brij Nath Bhat, Mohan Lal Dhar, and Hadi Nath Dhar, besides his actual name. This elaborate scheme reportedly defrauded victims of crores of rupees, often in collusion with other individuals.
Just last week, the EOW arrested Ghulam Mohi-Ud-Din Dar of Jawalapora, Budgam, for his alleged involvement in the same complex fraud. The apprehension of Soom Nath Koul, known by his multiple aliases, marks a significant step in the ongoing investigation into these extensive financial frauds and land transactions. Authorities continue their probe to fully uncover the fraud's scope and the roles of all involved.
