Instead, the council confirmed ongoing, serious negotiations with relevant nations aimed at lifting these "illegal" restrictions. While expressing hope that circumstances would not necessitate such measures, the SNSC also highlighted the availability of numerous non-military avenues to counter those complying with the restrictions, potentially targeting specific airports if required.
These developments unfold against the backdrop of stringent measures announced by the United States earlier this week. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent declared on Wednesday, September 23, that all Iranian airlines would face global shutdown. Speaking to CNBC, Bessent warned of secondary sanctions against any company providing aviation services to Iranian carriers, stating that such entities would be "knocked out of the dollar system" if they offered fuel, landing services, or sold tickets to Iranian flights.
Hours after these US sanctions took effect, SNSC Secretary Mohsen Rezaei appeared on state-run IRIB TV. He appealed to countries, particularly Iran's neighbours, to refrain from joining what he described as US "adventurism," predicting its imminent failure.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has reportedly rejected Iran's proposal for a seven-day ceasefire. Citing US officials, The Wall Street Journal indicated Trump's skepticism about Tehran's willingness to meet his demands, suggesting a renewed bombing campaign against Tehran is probable after the US November midterm elections. Trump, who has consistently vowed to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear bomb, further underscored his position by posting an image on Truth Social depicting a map of the Strait of Hormuz, provocatively labelled "Trump Strait."
