Washington issued a stark security alert on Saturday, September 19, warning of a potential rapid escalation across the Middle East. The US Department of State cited recent claims by Yemen's Houthi group regarding attacks on Saudi Arabian targets, including critical sites in Riyadh and Yanbu, as a significant factor in a "complex" regional security environment prone to "unforeseen escalation."
The advisory extended beyond a general warning, with US diplomatic missions in Jordan, Israel, Iraq, Qatar, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, and Lebanon all issuing specific security warnings to American citizens. These alerts urged heightened vigilance among Americans in the region, advising awareness of potential flight cancellations, airspace closures, and travel disruptions. For those outside the Middle East, the State Department strongly recommended reconsidering travel to and through the area, monitoring airport and airline operations if travel is essential. Further, the US cautioned that diplomatic facilities globally, including those outside the Middle East, could become targets, specifically mentioning potential actions by Iran and its supportive groups against US interests, businesses, and institutions worldwide.
Meanwhile, Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree asserted that the group executed successful operations against Saudi Arabia using ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones. Broadcast on Houthi-run Al Masirah TV, Saree specified that one operation targeted "sensitive targets" in Riyadh, while another struck an Aramco facility in Yanbu, claiming large fires erupted at both locations.
Saudi Arabian defenses, however, reported intercepting and destroying a ballistic missile launched towards Riyadh. Major General Turki Al-Malki, spokesperson for the Saudi-led coalition, also confirmed the thwarting of Houthi attempts to target Yanbu, Taif, Baish, and Farasan.
Amidst these developments, CNN reported that the United States is evaluating options for a large-scale military operation against the Houthis in Yemen. President Donald Trump reportedly cut short his Camp David stay on Saturday to convene a meeting reviewing potential strike options. This signals a possible shift towards direct military action by Washington, though no public announcement of such an operation has been made. The ongoing tensions have also reignited concerns over the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a vital maritime artery connecting the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, given the Houthis' control over territory along Yemen's Red Sea coast and their capacity to threaten shipping through this strategic passage.
