Facing delays and rejections in United States student visas, many aspiring scholars from Hyderabad are now eyeing Germany and France as viable alternatives for higher education, according to a report published on 15th September 2026.
To smooth their transition, a growing number of these students have started learning German and French before applying to foreign universities. While most programmes abroad are taught in English, proficiency in the local language can boost admission chances and ease everyday life once they arrive.
German, in particular, is seen as a strategic asset for those targeting technical fields such as IT and engineering. Knowing the language helps with tasks ranging from finding accommodation and navigating public transport to dealing with government offices. It also strengthens job applications where employers prefer candidates familiar with the local tongue.
“As Germany is one of the top choices of students, learning German can make it easier to adjust in a foreign country. It can also help in future job opportunities,” said Syed Fawaz, a Hyderabad student. Another student, Syed Ahmed, added, “Knowing German gives us confidence because we can communicate with people outside the university as well. It is useful for both studies and daily life.”
French is gaining similar traction. Mastery of French opens doors not only in France but also in Canada, Belgium, Switzerland and Luxembourg, and can aid in obtaining Canadian permanent residency. The language is valuable for careers in international business, tourism, hospitality and communications.
“Although France was not originally my first option, I am now considering it along with other countries. Learning French can be useful if I decide to study and work there,” explained Mohammed Irshad. Shirin, another student, noted, “Learning French gives us another skill apart from our degree. It can help with communication, understanding the local culture and finding more opportunities abroad.”
Advisors suggest German for those heading to Germany, Austria or German‑speaking parts of Switzerland, while French suits aspirants targeting France or French‑speaking regions of Canada, Belgium and Switzerland. Combining a European language with English and a professional qualification is emerging as a practical formula for Hyderabad students aiming at an international career.
