On September 3, 2026, Congress worker Hakeem Kurnadka claimed that Puttur MLA Ashok Rai dispatched Bajrang Dal members to assault him during a press event in Puttur.
Kurnadka told reporters that Rai regularly mingles with Bajrang Dal operatives and maintains close contacts with BJP leaders, while loyal Congress cadres are being ignored. He added that the alleged attack took place on September 1, 2026, when he was holding a press conference at the Puttur Press Bhavan.
According to Kurnadka, a group of Rai supporters entered the venue and tried to physically harm him. Journalists present intervened, preventing the situation from escalating. After the conference ended, Rai allegedly arrived with additional followers, creating a tense atmosphere that could have led to further confrontation.
The Congress activist emphasized that his grievance is not personal. He said elected representatives must answer public queries without resorting to intimidation, noting that democracy does not tolerate threats against citizens who raise questions.
Kurnadka urged the police to launch an impartial and thorough probe, free from political influence. He insisted that the truth must emerge and that anyone found responsible should face legal consequences.
He also highlighted the heightened responsibility of an MLA, stating that Rai should ensure his actions do not jeopardise law and order or public peace. While acknowledging that political differences are natural, Kurnadka warned that violence, threats, or coercion are unacceptable ways to handle dissent.
Reaffirming his long‑standing affiliation with the Congress party, Kurnadka said his involvement stems from conviction, not personal ambition. He declared that his commitment to the party will not change regardless of who holds power.
Finally, Kurnadka announced his intention to contest the next election against Rai if necessary, asserting that intimidation will not silence his voice or the concerns of the people he represents.
