Kundapura, Monday – Retired Kannada professor Dr Srikanth Siddapur of Purna Pragya College addressed students and faculty as a resource person during the inauguration of the Speciality of Kundaganada and the accompanying prize distribution. The ceremony formed part of the World Kundapra Kannada Day celebrations organised by the Kannada department of Bhandarkar Arts and Science College.
Speaking in his characteristic calm, Dr Siddapur warned that many everyday words have lost their meanings among speakers. He traced several of these terms to classical works such as the Pampabharata, Gadayuddha and Kumaravyasa Bharata, insisting that they belong to the living heritage of Kundagannada.
The professor urged the youth to explore literature written by local scholars Gundmi Chandrasekhara Aital and Rajagopal Acharya, both of whom have documented the nuances of the dialect. He also highlighted the importance of regular newspaper reading to strengthen linguistic skills.
U S Shenai, a member of Bhandarkar College Board of Trustees, echoed the sentiment, urging greater student participation in cultural programmes that celebrate regional language. He cited renowned Kannada writers Vaidehi and Mitra Venkataraj, who have portrayed Kundapra life in mainstream Kannada with authenticity.
The event was presided over by college principal Dr Shubkarachari, who reminded attendees that every language possesses its own essence and that nurturing the mother tongue is a collective responsibility. Introductory remarks were delivered by Kannada department head Manjunatha K S, followed by Dr Mohan B introducing the guests.
Lecturer Mamata announced the list of prize winners, while Archana Shetty moderated the proceedings. The program concluded with Sushmita Shetty offering a vote of thanks, leaving participants with a renewed commitment to preserve Kundagannada for future generations.
