Notorious Mumbai gangster Anuj Patil, 35, sustained a gunshot wound to his leg today after allegedly attempting to escape police custody near Hebri while being transported to Udupi. Patil, a key accused in the Mudrangadi David D'Souza shootout case, reportedly assaulted officers and fired a snatched weapon before police retaliated.
The incident unfolded this morning around 6:30 AM. A team comprising Kundapura Police Station Sub-Inspector Nanju Nayak and Kollur Police Station Sub-Inspector Vinay, along with their personnel, apprehended Patil within the Hebri Police Station limits. As officers escorted him towards Udupi, the gangster from Nalanda, Bihar, allegedly assaulted police personnel, seized Kollur PSI Vinay's service weapon, and discharged it. In self-defense, Kundapura PSI Nanju Nayak then fired at Patil's leg.
Seriously injured, Patil is currently receiving treatment at Ajjarakadu Hospital in Udupi. He faces accusations of orchestrating the Mudrangadi shootout by sending three direct perpetrators, including one named Raju, in the murder of former Gram Panchayat president and contractor David D'Souza. Operating primarily from Mumbai, Patil had evaded law enforcement since 2017.
Udupi SP Hariram Shankar confirmed that a total of 11 cases stand against Anuj Patil. These include a significant MCOCA Act case in Maharashtra, alongside ten cases registered under the Arms Act. Further details reveal four cases in Maharashtra, five in Gujarat, one in Daman and Diu, and one in Karnataka are pending against the notorious figure.
