Dr. Raviprasada Hegde, a professor at Alvas Ayurveda Medical College, called on young people to steer clear of drug addiction and adopt healthy lifestyles during an awareness programme held on Wednesday. Speaking as the chief guest at an event organised by the Alvas Pre-University College's drug control committee, he emphasised that only through such choices can individuals build strong character and contribute to a robust society.

The programme, titled 'Ill Effects of Drugs and an Addiction-Free Life,' was conducted at the college auditorium as part of the central government's Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan. Dr. Hegde noted that drug addiction is not a new problem, having plagued society in various forms since ancient times. However, he warned that its modern manifestations have become more dangerous and are increasingly luring young people.

'What often starts due to peer pressure or a quest for momentary pleasure gradually destroys a person's health, education, career, and family life,' he said. Drawing a stark comparison, he added that while poison kills instantly, alcohol and drug addiction slowly pushes individuals toward death. He highlighted the rising incidence of physical and mental health issues, family conflicts, road accidents, violence, and crime linked to substance abuse.

Dr. Hegde urged students to neither indulge curiosity nor experiment with addictive substances. 'No one starts using drugs with the intention of becoming an addict, but once hooked, escaping is extremely difficult,' he cautioned.

College principal Mohammed Sadakat, who presided over the event, stressed that building an addiction-free society must begin with individual resolve. 'If we correct ourselves, our families improve — and then society, the village, the district, the state, and the nation move in the right direction. The firm decision never to touch any addictive substance is the permanent solution,' he said. He noted with concern that young people aged 20 to 21 are increasingly drawn to addiction, urging students to focus on their goals and choose good friends.

The principal administered the Nasha Mukt Bharat pledge, with students vowing to abstain from drugs and spread awareness about addiction-free living. Vice-principal Jhansi P.N., programme coordinator T.A.N. Khandige, and others were present. Jason Castelino compered the event.
