On August 5, Udupi district witnessed a significant decrease in torrential rains that had been pouring since the beginning of the month. Wednesday saw occasional rain during the day, followed by a thunderstorm in the evening. Despite a 27% rain deficit in July, the district received 63% more rain than usual in the first five days of August, with a total of 213 mm of rainfall, exceeding the usual 346 mm. This sudden increase in rainfall brought relief to the district’s farmers who had been disappointed due to the earlier deficit. However, the heavy rain and wind also caused damage to the house of Manjaya Shetty in Anagalli village of Kundapur taluk, with estimated losses of over one lakh rupees.
Rainfall was reported in various parts of the district, with 70.4 mm being the average. Hebri received the highest rainfall at 112.1 mm, followed by Kundapur at 83.5 mm, Brahmavar at 78.7 mm, Byndur at 70.3 mm, Karkala at 50.3 mm, Udupi at 40.9 mm, and Kapu at 24.4 mm. In fact, Hebri received the highest rainfall in the state, with a total of 185.2 mm of rain falling in 24 hours from 8:30 am on August 4 to 8:30 am on August 5. Other areas, such as Agumbe in Shimoga district, Kaltur, Nalkur, Kuchur, Shivpur, Billadi, and Belve, also received significant rainfall, with some areas receiving over 100 mm of rain.
