Hyderabad is reeling from the news that over 800 Indian expats have lost their lives in workplace accidents between 2023 and 2025. The Ministry of External Affairs has released data showing that nearly 55 percent of these fatalities occurred in Arab countries. Saudi Arabia has the highest number of workplace deaths, with 182 reported incidents over the three-year period, followed by the United Arab Emirates with 128 deaths. The Telangana NRI Migrants’ Association has identified several factors contributing to these workplace deaths, including inadequate use of safety equipment, poor adherence to safety rules, and technical failures at worksites. Many workers are also exposed to extreme temperature fluctuations, spending their days in temperatures above 45 degrees Celsius and returning to accommodation at around 20 degrees Celsius, which can lead to serious health problems. A large number of Indian workers in Gulf countries are employed in high-risk sectors such as construction, retail, warehouses, and the automobile industry. Manda Bheem Reddy, Vice-Chairman of the Telangana NRI Cell, has emphasized the importance of wearing essential protective gear while working in hazardous industries. The Telangana Government’s NRI Advisory Committee has reported that over 250 people from Telangana died in Gulf countries in 2025, with the state government providing Rs 5 lakh compensation to the families of 150 deceased workers, while another 100 families are still waiting.
