Suryansh Shedge Opens Up on Family Sacrifice After First India Call-Up
Mumbai all-rounder Suryansh Shedge, 23, has spoken emotionally about his mother giving up her job to support his cricketing dreams after being named as Nitish Kumar Reddy's replacement in India's T20I squad for the upcoming series against Ireland and England. The Punjab Kings player received the surprise call-up earlier this week, marking his first entry into the national team.
In a candid conversation, Shedge revealed the personal cost behind his rise. "My mom had to quit her job to manage my cricket schedule and travel," he said, his voice heavy with gratitude. "She never complained. She just said, 'Go play, we will manage.'" The 23-year-old credited both his parents and his early coaches for instilling discipline and resilience in him during his formative years in Mumbai's competitive club circuit.
Shedge, known for his hard-hitting lower-order batting and medium-pace bowling, also praised captain Shreyas Iyer's leadership style. He described Iyer as a "calm and encouraging figure" who creates a positive environment for young players. "Shreyas bhai tells us to back our instincts. That freedom helps you perform without fear," Shedge added.
The all-rounder said he is not burdened by expectations. "I just want to enjoy my cricket. If I think too much about the result, I will lose the joy that got me here," he remarked. His approach mirrors the fearless brand of cricket that selectors have favoured in recent years.
Shedge replaces Andhra's Nitish Kumar Reddy, who has been rested after a busy domestic season. The T20I series against Ireland begins on January 22, followed by a five-match series against England. For coastal Karnataka readers, Shedge's story of family sacrifice and grounded ambition offers a relatable narrative of sporting success rooted in simple values.
