On a recent day, Riyadh witnessed a significant event as the Saudi Ministry of Defence intercepted three drones that entered the kingdom’s airspace from Iraq. Brigadier General Turki Al-Maliki, the ministry’s official spokesperson, made the announcement on social media platform X, stating that the ministry will take necessary measures to respond to any attempted attack on the kingdom. The spokesperson emphasized that the ministry reserves the right to respond at the appropriate time and place. This incident is the latest in a series of drone interceptions by Saudi Arabia in recent months. The region has been experiencing instability due to the conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. Tensions escalated after the US and Israel launched strikes against Iran in February, prompting Tehran to retaliate with strikes against Israel and US allies in the Gulf. A ceasefire was brokered on April 8 through Pakistani mediation, but talks in Islamabad failed to yield a lasting agreement. US President Donald Trump later extended the truce indefinitely. Last month, Saudi Arabia’s foreign ministry summoned Iraq’s ambassador to Riyadh over drone attacks launched from Iraqi territory. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia strongly condemned a recent drone attack on the United Arab Emirates that caused a fire near the Barakah nuclear power plant. The UAE’s defence ministry successfully intercepted two drones, while a third struck an electrical generator near the nuclear facility.
