On July 11, the Food Safety Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) issued nine notices to Swiggy Instamart, the quick-commerce platform of Swiggy, in New Delhi. This move comes after the regulator received multiple consumer complaints about the platform supplying rotten and expired food products. The complaints alleged that Swiggy Instamart delivered expired, spoiled, rotten, contaminated, and otherwise unsafe food products to consumers.

FSSAI took to social media to announce that it has directed Swiggy Instamart to submit a detailed explanation and compliance report, failing which the platform will face legal action. The regulator stated that consumer complaints included reports of an infant food formulation being found in a highly deteriorated and unsafe condition, with signs of contamination and improper storage and handling. Despite the product being returned, it was allegedly re-supplied to consumers.

Other complaints alleged that Swiggy Instamart delivered contaminated eggs and milk, along with damaged packaged food items. FSSAI also observed that some food business entities listed on the platform had incorrect, invalid, or non-existent FSSAI licence numbers. The regulator expressed concerns over seller onboarding, compliance verification, traceability, food quality monitoring, consumer grievance redressal, and supervision of food business activities.

FSSAI has been actively posting about its actions against food business operators on social media platforms. The notices issued to Swiggy Instamart are based on both suo motto cognizance and consumer complaints. Recently, the regulator has issued notices to several energy drinks makers, alcoholic beverage companies, food companies, and quick-commerce platforms.
