On July 6 and 7, senior officials from BRICS nations will gather in Guwahati, Assam, for the BRICS Heads of Anti-Drug Agencies Meeting, hosted by India. The two-day conference aims to strengthen cooperation against the growing global threat of drug trafficking. Organised by the Narcotics Control Bureau under the Ministry of Home Affairs, the meeting will focus on three major priorities: combating synthetic drugs and diverting precursor chemicals, enhancing intelligence-sharing and coordinated enforcement, and expanding institutional cooperation and capacity building.
Representatives from all BRICS countries will review the prevailing drug scenario in their respective nations, participating in six thematic sessions addressing emerging challenges in global narcotics control. Discussions will cover topics such as digital technologies for real-time drug interdiction, dismantling darknet-based trafficking networks, and strengthening drug demand reduction initiatives. The meeting will conclude with the adoption of a joint declaration outlining the shared commitments of BRICS members in addressing transnational drug-related challenges.
The Ministry of Home Affairs notes that the global narcotics landscape has undergone rapid transformation, driven by the rise of synthetic drugs and darknet-enabled trafficking. India intends to use the Guwahati meeting to shift BRICS cooperation towards practical, action-oriented collaboration, promoting closer operational coordination and intelligence exchange. The government has stepped up action against organised criminal networks involved in illicit narcotics, while focusing on public awareness campaigns and treatment and rehabilitation programmes.
