On June 1, in Udupi, MP Kota Srinivasa Pujari urged officials to commence development work at the Hangarakatte fishing port in Brahmavar taluk, which was allocated Rs 78 crore three years ago. Pujari expressed disappointment that the work had not begun despite the significant funding. Port and Fisheries Department officials attributed the delay to a pending file with the Bengaluru Environment Department, promising to start work once permission was granted. Following a phone call from Pujari to senior Bengaluru officials, they agreed to treat the matter as a special case and expedite permission. Meanwhile, Rs 84 lakhs was spent on dredging the nearby Kodikanyan short port. During a meeting at Pujari’s Udupi office, officials, including Deputy Director of Fisheries Department Kumaraswamy and Deputy Director of Port Department Rathore, assured that approval would be given and work would commence after the tender process was completed. In a separate matter, Pujari wrote to Union Minister of Agriculture and Horticulture Shivraj Singh Chouhan, requesting a one-month extension for the weather-based crop insurance scheme registration, which ended on June 30. He cited difficulties faced by farmers due to late rains and technical issues with the scheme, emphasizing the need for an extension to benefit farmers, particularly those growing groundnut and pepper.
