On the weekend of July 2026, Pixar’s Toy Story 5 continued its unstoppable run at the North American box office, earning USD 70 million in domestic ticket sales and USD 89.1 million overseas. Meanwhile, Warner Bros.’ highly anticipated superhero film Supergirl failed to make an impact, opening with USD 38 million in U.S. and Canadian theaters and USD 30 million in overseas markets. The film, directed by Craig Gillespie and starring Millie Alcock as Supergirl, scored an estimated worldwide debut of USD 68 million, significantly lower than expectations. Toy Story 5, on the other hand, has quickly amassed USD 585 million globally in two weeks, making it one of the biggest hits of the year.

The poor opening weekend for Supergirl puts it behind the disappointing debuts of DC busts like The Flash and The Green Lantern, and only barely ahead of Joker: Folie a Deux. According to David A. Gross, who runs the movie consulting firm FranchiseRe, superhero movies no longer drive box office success like they once did, with the genre experiencing a downturn of approximately USD 3.5 billion annually from its highs in 2017-2019.

The next DC release, Clayface, is scheduled for October, while James Gunn’s Superman follow-up, Man of Tomorrow, is currently in production and set for release in July 2027. As the box office landscape continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how DC Studios will recover from the disappointing debut of Supergirl, which cost an estimated USD 170 million to make.
