Mangaluru is preparing to host a significant women's convention titled 'Rise and Reclaim' on September 5 at 2:30 PM at the Mangaluru Town Hall. Organized under the banner of the Women India Movement, the event aims to ignite awareness, cultivate leadership skills, and inspire women's active involvement in social and political transformation.
Misriya Kannur, a State Committee Member of SDPI and the Director of the Women's Convention, provided details during a press conference held on Thursday at the SDPI office in Mangaluru. Kannur stressed the pivotal role of women in India's journey towards progress, asserting that women, who constitute half the nation's populace, must extend their influence beyond family management to actively shape the country's future.
She highlighted the ongoing disparity, noting that women have not yet fully achieved equal opportunities, justice, or adequate representation across political, administrative, economic, and social spheres. In this context, Kannur emphasized the urgency for women today to realize their potential and confidently step into public life.
The convention will advocate for women to unite and raise their voices for critical issues such as education, employment, safety, health, economic self-reliance, and social justice. Kannur underscored the necessity of a collective struggle against violence, discrimination, exploitation, and abuse targeting women. She also pointed out women's crucial role in combating drug addiction, which jeopardizes the future of youth, and in leading an aware society against social evils like child safety, cyber exploitation, and educational deprivation.
Describing the Women India Movement as a force committed to empowering women, Kannur explained its resolve to foster awareness of women's rights, a sense of responsibility, and the establishment of a just society. She acknowledged that women often face injustice in various fields and, while patience is a virtue, negligence towards women is unacceptable. Kannur concluded with a powerful statement: "If patience crosses its limits, and women rise up, that day a great revolution could occur, creating new history."
Several dignitaries are expected to participate in the conference, including former minister B.T. Lalitha, advocate Arshitha, High Court advocate Hina Haider, and Mamata Anekal. Also present at the press conference were Ayesha Yasmin, President of the Women India Movement Mangaluru City District; Shameema Thumbe, General Secretary; and SDPI District Member Shamshad Abubakkar.
