Srinagar, June. 18: Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh region were hit by five light-intensity earthquakes in 24 hours. With 4.5 being the most intense of all. A 3.0 magnitude earthquake hit Jammu and Kashmir at 2.03 pm on Saturday again after tremors were felt.
The epicenter of the 3.0-magnitude tremor, which struck at 2.03 pm, was in the hilly district along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, a Meteorological Department official said. The depth of the earthquake was five kilometers below the surface at 33.31 degrees north latitude and 75.19 degrees east longitude.
The second earthquake struck around 9.44 pm with a magnitude of 4.5 at a distance of 271 km northeast of Leh, Ladakh. Within 15 minutes of the earthquake on the India-China border, a magnitude 4.4 earthquake occurred in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district at 9.55 pm. This is the seventh earthquake in Doda district in last five days.
The National Center for Seismology tweeted, “Earthquake of magnitude 4.4 occurred on 17-06-2023, 21:55:39 IST, Lat: 33.04 and Long: 75.70, Depth: 18 km, Location: Doda, Jammu and Kashmir.”
Also, in the wee hours of Sunday, a magnitude 4.1 earthquake hit the region again with its epicenter near the India-China border, 295 km northeast of Leh district in Ladakh. The fifth and last seismic activity was observed near Katra in Jammu and Kashmir. A magnitude 4.1 earthquake struck 80 km east of Katra at 3.50 am at a depth of 11 km.
