Mumbai: Amid the ongoing nationwide debate on the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut on Saturday said he would comment on the matter only after the draft is submitted. He told ANI, “The draft of the proposed UCC has not yet been put in the public domain, it is neither with you (media) nor with us. Let the draft be completed, and then we will comment.”
The Law Commission on 14 June resumed its exercise to implement the UCC by seeking “views and suggestions” from the public and “recognised” religious organizations within 30 days regarding the proposal that the UCC has been in place for a long time. It is included in the agenda of the ruling BJP. A day earlier, the Nationalist Congress Party, an ally of the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), took a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his remarks on the Uniform Civil Code.
Referring to PM Modi’s recent statement on UCC, Sharad Pawar said, “BJP has failed to hold the states. Many states are not with them, what is going to happen in the next election while PM is making such statements.” On Tuesday, PM Modi pitched for the UCC in Bhopal, saying the country cannot run on two laws and that the Uniform Civil Code is part of the Constitution. In the BJP’s 2019 Lok Sabha election manifesto, the party had promised to implement the UCC if voted to power.
