Udupi District Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar announced on November 2 that a total of 150 social‑media accounts have been identified for illegally posting and sharing photographs of a rape victim linked to the suicide case of Pradeep Poojary from Perdur. The warning came during a press briefing held at the district police headquarters, where the SP outlined the steps the department will take against the offenders.
According to the SP, the offending accounts circulated the victim's images without consent, violating privacy rights and aggravating the trauma faced by the family. Video evidence recovered from the platforms helped investigators trace the sources, enabling the rapid compilation of a list of users responsible for the defamatory content.
Hariram Shankar emphasized that the police have already filed complaints under relevant sections of the Information Technology Act and the Indian Penal Code. He added that each identified account will face strict legal repercussions, including possible arrest and prosecution, to deter similar violations in the future.
The suicide of Pradeep Poojary, a resident of Perdur, sparked widespread discussion on social media, with many users sharing unverified details and graphic material. Authorities stressed that such behavior not only disrespects the deceased' family but also undermines ongoing investigations.
Law enforcement officials urged the public to refrain from disseminating unverified or graphic content related to ongoing cases. They also called on platform providers to cooperate fully in removing the offending material and handing over user data to aid the investigation.
As the probe progresses, the district police have pledged to keep the community informed about further developments and to ensure that justice is served for both the victim and the deceased.
