On August 8, 2026, Udupi police apprehended three individuals in connection with the murder of David D’Souza, a 55-year-old businessman and Congress leader, who was shot dead at Mudarangadi in Udupi district. The incident occurred on August 7 at around 3:45 pm near the St Xavier Church Complex. D’Souza was rushed to Adarsha Hospital in critical condition but was declared dead. Preliminary investigations suggest a financial dispute may have led to the alleged contract killing.
Acting on a tip, police intercepted a bus near Ottinene in Byndoor and apprehended the accused. One of the accused, Raju, allegedly fired at the police and was shot in the leg in self-defence. The other two accused, Ajay Rastogi and Jiyahul Wajul Sheikh, were apprehended in Kumta and Bhatkal respectively. According to police, D’Souza had a financial dispute with an out-of-state company over a construction project, which may have led to the contract killing.
The operation was led by Udupi District Police Deputy Superintendent Belliyappa, with assistance from various police teams. Police are continuing efforts to identify those who assisted in the crime. The motorcycle used by the accused was seized by police.
