On June 9, in Udupi, the district administration announced the launch of a parenting scheme aimed at providing temporary guardianship to children between 07 and 18 years old. These children have been living in child care institutions registered under the Juvenile Justice Act 2015 due to various reasons. The scheme allows such children to grow up in a family environment. Every child has the right to a family upbringing, but some have to be enrolled in institutions run by the government and voluntary organizations. When a child cannot be placed with their own family, the scheme offers an alternative family setup. The guardianship period can be up to 1 year for short-term or long-term care, depending on the child’s needs, and can be extended until the child turns 18 based on compatibility assessments. For more information, interested individuals can contact the District Child Protection Officer at the District Collector’s Office Complex in Manipal, or the Chairman of the Child Welfare Committee in Nittoor, Udupi.
Contact details include the District Child Protection Unit at 0820-2574964, and the Chairman, Child Welfare Committee, at 0820-2580220 or 948137220. The District Child Protection Officer encouraged interested parties to reach out for more details on the scheme.
