A troupe of classical dancers from the coastal districts of Karnataka unveiled a fresh stage work this week, drawing its musical backbone from a beloved kriti composed by the 18th‑century saint Tyagaraja. The production, staged at the historic Town Hall in Mangalore, blended Carnatic vocal arrangements with contemporary choreography, offering audiences a vivid reinterpretation of the devotional piece.

Director and choreographer Ananya Rao, who has spent the past decade refining Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi techniques, explained that the chosen kriti – known for its lyrical devotion to Lord Rama – provided an emotional canvas that resonated with the performers. “The melody carries a timeless yearning,” Rao said during the post‑show discussion. “Our aim was to translate that yearning into movement, allowing each gesture to echo the song’s spiritual depth.”

Musician Vijay Kumar led a live ensemble of violin, mridangam and veena, adhering closely to Tyagaraja’s original composition while subtly adjusting tempo to match the dancers’ narrative arcs. The visual design, curated by local artist Priya Shetty, incorporated coastal motifs such as sea‑foam patterns and traditional Yakshagana colours, rooting the performance in regional aesthetics.

Audience members, ranging from long‑time Carnatic aficionados to younger patrons attending the annual Coastal Arts Festival, responded with enthusiastic applause. Critics noted the seamless integration of classical and modern elements, praising the production for honoring tradition without becoming a mere replica.

The show will run for three consecutive evenings, with tickets available through the town hall box office and online portals. Organisers hope the performance will inspire further collaborations between Karnataka’s rich musical heritage and its vibrant dance community, reinforcing the living legacy of Tyagaraja’s compositions in contemporary artistic expression.
