Tomato price crosses Rs 100: See what is the reason behind the sudden price rise?
Bengaluru, June 27: There has been a huge rise in the price of tomatoes across the country, which has now crossed the century mark. In many cities including Bengaluru, the price of tomato has reached one hundred rupees. The price of tomato, which was around Rs 40-50 last week, has doubled in a single week.
The prices of not only tomatoes but also other vegetables have skyrocketed. As a result of the increase in the price of vegetables, many hotels have increased the prices of meals and snacks. Tomato is currently Rs 100-120. In Kolar district, which is the largest producer of tomatoes in the state, the number of farmers growing tomatoes is less and the price has skyrocketed due to non-supply in the expected quantity.
At Kolar APMC, Asia’s second largest market, a 15 kg box of tomatoes is currently sold at Rs 1,100. In Yadgiri district, the price of a 20 kg bag of tomatoes is Rs 2400.
What is the reason for the sudden Tomato price hike?
Climate change, intense sun, lack of water are the major reasons for decrease in tomato production. Due to excessive sunshine and untimely rains, the yield has not been as expected in many places. Due to this, the supply has decreased and suddenly the demand has increased, so the price has skyrocketed.
Tomato and onion crops are like a lottery. If you come in this, you can get lakhs of profit, if you don’t get the price, there will be a huge loss. Growing tomatoes usually requires a lot of capital as well. As it is a labor intensive crop, the shortage of laborers has made many farmers shy away from the decision to grow tomatoes. Farmers in Kolar have reduced the tomato crop and started growing beans. This also leads to decrease in production.

Not only in Karnataka but across the country tomato prices have seen a huge rise. KG in Bhopal. If the price of tomato is 100 rupees, the price of tomato has crossed 100 rupees in the national capital New Delhi too. In Punjab and Jaipur, the current price of tomato is Rs 60-80.
