On Wednesday, Bangladesh Awami League President Sheikh Hasina commended India for being a steadfast ally and emphasized that her planned return to Bangladesh is a personal decision, not involving the Indian government. Hasina, who is currently in exile in India, expressed her gratitude towards the country and its leadership, particularly Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Her son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, also joined the press conference online from the US, thanking Prime Minister Modi for showing his mother utmost respect.
Hasina reiterated her intention to return to Bangladesh in December, although she did not specify a date or time. She stressed that this decision is personal and not a matter for the Indian government to be involved in. The former Bangladesh Prime Minister has been living in exile in India since 2024, following a volatile student-led demonstration and a subsequent death sentence awarded in absentia for alleged crimes against humanity.
Hasina expressed her desire to restore the symbols of victory and pride of the Liberation War, which ended in December 1971. She believes in a secular democratic system and seeks to return to her country to bring back that pride. Her son, Sajeeb Wazed, alleged that Bangladesh has become vulnerable to foreign intelligence agencies, including the ISI, and warned of terror elements operating openly.
Sajeeb Wazed also commented on the recent meeting between US Special Envoy Sergio Gor and Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, stating that it is part of diplomacy and the US’s focus on trade. Hasina’s planned return to Bangladesh has not been discussed with the government of Bangladesh, and she is proceeding with her decision regardless of their stance.
