The Supreme Court on Sunday directed authorities in the national capital to ensure the normal functioning of Metro and railway services, coupled with uninterrupted internet connectivity. A bench comprising Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V. Mohana issued these comprehensive directives while addressing a series of contempt petitions that alleged deliberate disregard for the court's October 9 order. That prior ruling aimed to safeguard public services in Delhi ahead of a proposed protest targeting Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The apex court clarified that Metro and railway operations should proceed normally unless public order disturbances necessitate restrictions. It further stipulated that people's movement across the city must be permitted, subject only to standard traffic regulations, and called for an immediate review of existing barricade requirements, considering both law enforcement needs and traffic flow.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Centre, informed the bench that Metro services had been normalised and internet access restored.
