On 15 October 2026 Telangana’s power grid logged an unprecedented demand of 20,003 megawatts, the highest level ever recorded, as unusually warm mid‑October weather forced homes and businesses to increase cooling usage.
At 10.29 am the state reached this peak, while the Telangana Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGSPDCL) supplied 228.14 million units of electricity, marking its biggest daily output to date.
Comparative data show a sharp rise from the previous year: the peak demand on 9 September 2025 stood at 15,906 MW, whereas the same date in 2026 recorded 19,543 MW, an increase of nearly 23 per cent, before climbing further to the 20,003 MW mark on 15 October.
Officials attribute the surge to a combination of high temperatures, elevated humidity, extensive use of air‑conditioners, expanding urban and commercial activity, and heightened agricultural power needs. A weaker monsoon and lower rainfall have compounded the strain on the electricity network.
Despite the pressure, Telangana’s power utilities reported uninterrupted service, crediting meticulous planning, coordinated action and the dedication of engineers, substation operators, linemen and field staff. TGSPDCL chairman and managing director Jitesh V. Patil reaffirmed the utility’s commitment to delivering reliable power to agricultural, domestic, commercial and industrial consumers.
The record underscores the growing challenge of balancing rising demand with supply stability as the region navigates post‑monsoon conditions and increasingly hot weather patterns.
