The Ramakrishna Mission, in partnership with MRPL and the Swachh Mangaluru Foundation, organised the ninth monthly shramadan drive along Railway Station Road in Mangaluru, targeting a long‑neglected black spot near the University College Library that serves railway passengers, tourists and local commuters.

Senior Manager M.K. Rao and CSR Manager Keshav Patali of MRPL jointly inaugurated the event, joined by General Manager Mandar Kale, Captain Ganesh Karnik and Professor Babita Shetty, who praised the volunteers for their dedication.

Veteran volunteers including Vittaldas Prabhu, Satyanarayana K.V., Aniruddha Nayak, Kamalaksha Pai, R.K. Bhat, Prakash, Ashok, Uday K.P., Taranath Alva, Mehaboob, Gangadhara Shastri and Nagesh cleared accumulated waste, removed stray banners, dry leaves and debris, and restored the area to a cleaner, more welcoming state.

Simultaneously, a student team from Nitte Institute of Physiotherapy, led by faculty members Ruchita Narsia and Arun Varghese and coordinated by Ashwini and Edwin Vijay, tackled the pedestrian pathway. They peeled off posters, scrubbed sticky residues and washed the walls, leaving a visibly fresher surface. Young volunteers from Canara College also joined, highlighting the growing civic sense among the city’s youth.

Organisers view this effort as the first phase of a broader plan that includes painting the walls with Warli art and planting greenery along the roadside, aiming to transform the former eyesore into an attractive public space for arriving train travellers.
