On Thursday, students and youths protesting at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi for nearly a month expressed dissatisfaction with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s directive to set up fast-track courts for speedy trials and punishment for those guilty of exam paper leaks. The protesters, who have been holding the ruling NDA government accountable for exam irregularities, urged the Prime Minister to seek the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan instead. A protester stated that fast-track courts are not enough and that the Prime Minister is turning a deaf ear to their demands. The protesters, who have been peaceful in their agitation, cited the police action against them during the July 20 ‘Sansad Chalo’ march, where they alleged that the Centre unleashed cane charge, harassed women, and forcefully took away Sonam Wangchuk. The protesters questioned the Prime Minister’s silence over the alleged police brutality and demanded that he address the violence and harassment. One protester said that if leaders from the ruling NDA come to the protest site and hold talks with them, they may consider leaving. The protesters’ reactions came after PM Modi’s statement on setting up fast-track courts to ensure swift punishment for those involved in paper leaks. A young woman protester said that the effectiveness of the directive depends on the solution the students receive, and that they are waiting for action, not just words.
