A pregnant police constable was attacked with an iron rod at the Bengaluru City Railway Police Station in the early hours of Tuesday, 26 August 2026.
Constable Shilpa D had been posted as a night‑time sentry on 25 August. At about 5:10 a.m. on the following day, a man identified as Gajendra arrived, claiming his mobile phone, left for charging on platform five, had been stolen. Shilpa informed him that the station house officer was resting and that she would return in roughly ten minutes.
Instead of waiting, Gajendra grew hostile, threatened the constable and verbally abused her. He then seized an iron rod attached to a barricade wheel and struck Shilpa on the head repeatedly before fleeing the scene. Fellow officers rushed her to a private hospital where she is receiving treatment.
The railway police registered a case based on Shilpa’s complaint and arrested Gajendra, charging him under sections relating to attempt to murder and obstruction of a government servant in the discharge of duty. Police observations indicate that the accused was intoxicated at the time of the assault.
Investigators traced Gajendra to Odisha; he works as a construction labourer in Chennai. Railway Superintendent of Police Sara Fatima confirmed that the perpetrator arrived with a false theft claim and assaulted the constable while under the influence of alcohol.
Shilpa’s brother, Krishna Naik, has publicly alleged that senior officers share indirect responsibility. He says his sister repeatedly asked Sub‑Inspector Nataraj and Inspector Kantaraj for a daytime posting, but was consistently assigned night duty. A video of his statement has circulated widely on social media.
Further inquiries are underway to determine any procedural lapses that may have contributed to the incident.
