On Tuesday, a confrontation erupted outside Parliament’s main gate in New Delhi as MPs from the ruling NDA and the Opposition INDIA bloc staged protests and raised counter-slogans over the Jharkhand police action on job aspirants and issues surrounding the Ram temple funds.
Security personnel formed a cordon between the two groups as NDA MPs alleged that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was avoiding a debate on student protests, while INDIA bloc MPs demanded accountability from Union Home Minister Amit Shah over alleged police excesses during the July 20 student protests.
The NDA MPs, who had attended their weekly parliamentary party meeting, marched towards the main entrance of the House and raised slogans such as ‘Rahul Gandhi Jawab Do’ and ‘Rahul Gandhi Bhago Maat’.
Meanwhile, Opposition MPs, including Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, protested over the alleged theft of donations at the Ram temple in Ayodhya and the police excesses against student protesters over NEET paper leaks.
BJP MP Nishikant Dubey criticized Rahul Gandhi’s mindset, claiming that Devendra Nath Mahto, who is on hunger strike in Jharkhand, was beaten up in the state. Another BJP MP, Kangana Ranaut, said that children in Jharkhand were being subjected to atrocities and demanded answers.
The agitation by students over alleged irregularities in Jharkhand recruitment exams escalated on Monday, with police using water cannons and lathi-charging protesters to prevent a march to the assembly.
