MCC discusses issues concerns about street vendors

Mangaluru: The Town Vending Committee held a meeting on Wednesday in the committee hall of Mangaluru City Corporation. The meeting was chaired by MCC Commissioner Akshy Sridhar, and street vendors’ concerns were discussed. Street vendors with approval from the Town Vending Committee, as well as valid identification cards and certificates, are permitted to continue doing business under the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2021.

MCC will appoint 10 survey teams to categorize street vendors according to their trading activities. Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Scheme, 2020, specifies a new round of surveys that will be conducted across the city. The Town Vending Committee will issue identification cards and trade licenses to deserving street vendors based on the results of the survey.

Vendors on the street with valid identification and trade licenses will be assigned zones in which to conduct business. According to the commissioner, these zones have been recognized, and the proposal to declare them as trade zones is in its final stages.

Mangaluru City Corporation and police will take harsh action against those violating street vending norms, he said. Dakshina Kannada Street Vendor Development Association was asked to cooperate with MCC. MCC deputy commissioner Ajith M and members of the Town Vending Committee attended the meeting.
