Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) president Mayawati on Tuesday expressed grave concern over the deteriorating standards of political discourse in India, specifically denouncing personal attacks and abusive language. Her statement, disseminated via a post on X from New Delhi, comes as a significant political controversy engulfs Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge's recent remark targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi's late father.

Mayawati characterized the current political climate as one marred by alarming levels of mutual distrust, animosity, and a pervasive blame game. She observed that personal attacks have become increasingly unrestrained, unparliamentary, undignified, insulting, narrow-minded, and even caste-driven, sometimes escalating to violent rhetoric. The BSP chief urged individuals in top positions to actively discourage such objectionable and toxic politics, if not set an example of mutual respect.

This strong admonition from the BSP leader directly follows remarks made by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge during a Sunday event in Patna. When an audience member reportedly interjected, asserting 'Modi nahin jaayega' (Prime Minister would not leave power), Kharge retorted, 'Modi ka baap bhi jayega' (Even Modi's father will have to go). This statement, repeated by Kharge, quickly ignited a political firestorm, drawing sharp criticism from BJP leaders who accused him of crossing acceptable boundaries in political discourse.

Beyond the immediate controversy, Mayawati also warned that narrow-minded, self-serving, and anti-poor politics, coupled with widespread governmental corruption and lingering questions about electoral integrity, risks eroding public faith in the nation's political framework. She emphasized that citizens expect leaders to prioritize critical issues such as poverty, unemployment, and inflation over ego battles and personal confrontations, advocating for restraint from all political parties in their public statements.
