Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar, a native of Mangaluru, and his flydubai crew have received high honours from the United Arab Emirates for their extraordinary courage during a severe in-flight emergency on September 30. In Dubai, UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan bestowed the prestigious First Class Order of Zayed II upon the crew members, acknowledging their pivotal role in averting a potential catastrophe.

During the incident, Captain Machchhar, despite suffering serious injuries in the cockpit, managed to open the door. This critical action enabled fellow crew members and passengers to intervene swiftly, helping to bring the challenging situation under control and ensuring the safety of everyone on board.

Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, and Chairman of the Executive Council of Dubai, formally presented these honours. On Tuesday, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, accompanied by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, also received the crew members. The UAE leadership commended their exceptional professionalism and unwavering commitment to passenger safety, reiterating that the protection of people's safety and security remains a paramount national priority. The grateful crew, in turn, expressed their profound pride in receiving such esteemed recognition.

This significant UAE award follows widespread international appreciation for Captain Machchhar's decisive actions. Leaders from India, Israel, and the United States have publicly lauded his bravery. Israel, in particular, has announced its own civilian bravery award for the Indian captain, which will be presented upon his recovery from injuries.

Earlier, on October 3, Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan had personally visited Captain Machchhar during his medical treatment. During this visit, Sheikh Hamdan praised the pilot's courage, composure, and deep sense of responsibility in the face of a difficult emergency. He highlighted Machchhar's actions as an exemplary display of bravery and dedication to human life, stating, 'From us, and from the leadership of the nation, he has our full appreciation and praise.' The Crown Prince also articulated the UAE's pride in counting Machchhar as part of its team, reflecting the nation's core values of compassion, peace, and respect for life. The UAE General Civil Aviation Authority had previously commended Captain Machchhar, the flight crew, and the passengers for their collective efforts.
