Muneer Katipalla, CPI(M) Dakshina Kannada District Secretary, condemned the harassment of street vendors in Mangaluru, calling it an unconstitutional act. On January 1, 2024, he inaugurated a day-and-night protest under the leadership of the Dakshina Kannada District Street Vendors’ Association, demanding free opportunity for Sunday Bazaar trade. Katipalla criticized ministers and officials who prioritize European-style road construction over the needs of poor customers. The protest, which began today, will continue until the corporation respects the interests of Sunday Bazaar vendors. CITU district leaders, including J. Balakrishna Shetty and Jayanthi Shetty, spoke in support of the struggle. Prominent members of the Street Vendors’ Association, such as Muzaffar Ahmed and Vijay Jain, were also present. The protesters warned that if the oppression of Sunday Bazaar vendors continues, the struggle will be intensified.
