On Tuesday, Mangaluru police launched a surprise operation, conducting drug tests on students near Kotekar Beeri and Konaje. The operation, which took place between 4:30 PM and 6:00 PM, targeted students from various colleges, including Para College, Nitte K.S. Hegde, St. Aloysius, PA College, Bearys Institute, Tippu Sultan College, and Canara College. A total of 72 students were tested at Kotekar Beeri, with one student found to have consumed drugs, while the remaining 71 tested negative. Additionally, 87 students from Konaje PA College were checked, with all of them testing negative.
The operation was led by the ACPs of the South and Central divisions, under the supervision of the DCP of the Law and Order division. Students traveling in public and college buses were stopped and subjected to on-the-spot testing using multi-drug testing kits. The police department views the low percentage of positive results as a positive development, but acknowledges that more needs to be done to eradicate drug consumption among students.
The Mangaluru City Police Commissioner’s office stated that the student who tested positive will be sent for counseling after necessary legal procedures are completed. The police aim to curb the drug menace through such operations and counseling initiatives.
