On Sunday, Mangaluru City Corporation’s immediate past corporator A. C. Vinayaraj led the Quit India Day celebration at Tagore Park, Mangaluru, by hoisting the flag. The event was organized by the Mahatma Gandhi Shanti Pratisthan, located within the park. Vinayaraj highlighted Mahatma Gandhi’s pivotal role in the Quit India Movement, emphasizing his leadership and the awareness he raised among the people to participate in the freedom struggle. Pushparaj B.N., President of the Dakshina Kannada District Working Journalists’ Association, paid tribute to Gandhi by garlanding his statue and discussing the significance of the Quit India Movement in the country’s fight for independence.
A college-level essay competition, titled ‘My Role in a Drug-Free Nation’, was also held, with Pranamya Bhat from Dayananda Pai Satish Pai Government First Grade College securing the first prize. Rukhsana from School of Social Work Roshni Nilaya College and Dhanvitha from Kavoor BGS Pre-University College won the second and third prizes, respectively. The winners received prizes, mementos, and cash awards at the ceremony, which was judged by Prof. Shivaram Shetty, Dr. Ramesh B, and Dr. Amitha for the college category. Other judges included Savitha Y, Geetha Shetty, and Vijaya Lakshmi. The event was presided over by Prabhakar Shriyan, Vice President of Mahatma Gandhi Shanti Pratisthan, with Secretary Dr. Ismail N welcoming the gathering and Joint Secretaries Kallur Nagesh and Usha M compering the program. Assistant Treasurer Prem Chand delivered the vote of thanks, and Joint Secretary N. G. Mohan was also present.
