On Saturday, October 10, 2026, hundreds of worshippers gathered at Someshwara beach in Ullal taluk and at the historic Sri Manjunatha Temple in Kadri, Mangaluru, to perform Pinda Pradana as part of Mahalaya Amavasya celebrations.

The coastal Shiva shrine at Someshwara, a recognised venue for ancestral rites, saw devotees arranging rice balls, sesame seeds and ghee on the sand. Temple officials had deployed extra priests to guide participants, allowing families to conduct the ritual either individually or in groups according to their customs.

At the same time, the Kadri Sri Manjunatha Temple experienced a similar influx of believers who offered prayers and sought blessings on the auspicious day. Both sites reflected the belief that Pinda Pradana helps departed souls attain peace and grants prosperity to their descendants.

Across neighboring Udupi district, coastal locations such as Malpe Padukere, Surathkal, Panambur, Kaup and Uchila also prepared for the concluding day of Pitru Paksha. Devotees at Sri Vadabhandeshwara Balarama Temple in Malpe took a ceremonial sea dip before performing Tila Tarpana, while families elsewhere observed the rites at home, presenting offerings before photographs of their ancestors.

Traditional customs extended beyond the primary rituals. Many participants fed crows and cows, distributed food to the needy, and donated clothing to Brahmins, reinforcing the communal spirit of the observance.

Security measures were heightened along the busy beaches. Lifeguards and police units were stationed at Malpe and Kaup to manage crowds and ensure safety during the ceremonies.

Overall, Mahalaya Amavasya highlighted the deep-rooted reverence for ancestors among coastal Karnataka communities, with Someshwara beach and Kadri Manjunatha Temple serving as focal points for collective remembrance and spiritual solace.
